The Town of Keenesburg Mayor, Trustees and staff attended a emergency exercise in Hudson on Tuesday, May 31, 2011.  The town continues to update its emergency operations plan in the event of a disaster.  We do have a siren for a warning system, however it has come to our attention that some residents can not hear our siren.  For your protection please purchase a NOAA weather radio so that you may have the most up to date weather information available to you.  Please see the back of this newsletter for safety recommendations from FEMA.

The recent hail storm has brought many contractors to town.  Please be aware that they must obtain a peddlers license from Town Hall in order to solicit work.  The town currently does not require a building permit for roof replacement, but you have the option to request an inspection if you desire.  The town board is considering changing this to require building permits in order to help protect the home owners from any possible fraud.  Please contact town hall before you have any work done on your property for the latest requirements.

We are aware that the streets are in need of cleaning, unfortunately the street sweeper has been inoperable for the past several months.  We have had an estimate done, and now have the repair scheduled and it should be up and ready to go in the next month.

We continue to work on the west side of Schey park planting trees and bushes and installing xeriscape, to increase the enjoyment of the park!

Text Box: What to Do During a Tornado
If you are under a tornado WARNING, seek shelter immediately!

If you are in:

Then:

A structure (e.g. residence, small building, school, nursing home, hospital, factory, shopping center, high-rise building)

Go to a pre-designated shelter area such as a safe room, basement, storm cellar, or the lowest building level. If there is no basement, go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level (closet, interior hallway) away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls. Put as many walls as possible between you and the outside. Get under a sturdy table and use your arms to protect your head and neck. Do not open windows.

A vehicle, trailer, or mobile home

Get out immediately and go to the lowest floor of a sturdy, nearby building or a storm shelter. Mobile homes, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes.

The outside with no shelter

Lie flat in a nearby ditch or depression and cover your head with your hands. Be aware of the potential for flooding.

Do not get under an overpass or bridge. You are safer in a low, flat location.

Never try to outrun a tornado in urban or congested areas in a car or truck. Instead, leave the vehicle immediately for safe shelter.

Watch out for flying debris. Flying debris from tornadoes causes most fatalities and injuries.
